Event Overview
Taking place in late October 2026, IRONMAN 70.3 Savannah offers athletes a taste of Southern hospitality set against a backdrop of Spanish moss and historic architecture. Savannah is a relatively new addition to the circuit, but it has quickly become a favorite due to its incredibly flat and fast profile. The race typically begins with a point-to-point swim in the Savannah River, followed by a lightning-fast bike course and a scenic run through the heart of the city’s historic districts.
Course Details & Terrain
The Swim (1.2 Miles): The Savannah River is tidal. Usually, the organizers time the race to capitalize on a favorable current, making this one of the fastest swim splits you’ll ever record. However, the water can be murky, and sighting against the morning sun requires focus.
The Bike (56 Miles): 'Flat as a pancake' is an understatement. The route takes you out of the city and onto the highways and marshlands. While there is zero elevation gain to speak of, the challenge here is the wind. Without hills to break your rhythm, you will be in the aero bars for almost the entire 56 miles. This requires significant core and neck strength.
The Run (13.1 Miles): A multi-loop course that winds through the iconic squares of Savannah. You’ll run under the shade of massive oak trees. The terrain is flat, but the many turns and changes from asphalt to偶尔 (occasional) pavers require nimble footwork.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
For Beginners: This is perhaps the most accessible 70.3 in the United States. The assisted swim and the flat bike and run profiles make it very manageable for those worried about time cut-offs or technical climbing.
For Experienced Runners: This is a 'pure power' course. If you have a high FTP and can hold an aero position for two-plus hours, you can put down a world-class bike split here. It is a prime venue for a 70.3 personal best.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Aero is King: Because the bike course is so flat, aerodynamic drag is your biggest enemy. Ensure your bike fit is optimized for comfort in the aero bars. If you have to sit up every 10 minutes to stretch, you’re losing free speed.
- Hydrate for Humidity: Even in October, Georgia can be deceptively humid. You might not feel yourself sweating as much due to the wind on the bike, but you are losing fluids. Use a high-sodium electrolyte mix to prevent cramping during the run.
- Sight the Bridges: During the swim, use the Talmadge Memorial Bridge as a primary sighting landmark. It’s massive and hard to miss, helping you maintain a straight line in the river current.
