Event Overview
Taking place on June 14, 2026, in Cambridge, Maryland, IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman is one of the most storied and popular events on the North American circuit. Known for being 'flat and fast,' it is a perennial favorite for those looking to post a blistering time. However, don't let the flat profile fool you—Eagleman is a race of attrition, often defined by intense humidity, scorching sun, and the relentless winds of the Dorchester County marshlands. The atmosphere in Great Marsh Park is quintessential Americana, with a community that fully embraces the 'flock' of triathletes arriving each June.
Course Details & Terrain
The Swim: A 1.2-mile R-shaped swim in the Choptank River. While the water is usually brackish and relatively calm, it can become 'choppy' if the wind picks up. Sighting is critical here, as the sun can be low on the horizon depending on your wave start time.
The Bike: A single 56-mile loop through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. This is one of the flattest bike courses in the world, with a total elevation gain of less than 300 feet. The challenge is the wind; there is nowhere to hide. You will be in the aero position for almost the entire duration, which puts a unique strain on the lower back and neck.
The Run: A two-loop, 13.1-mile course through local neighborhoods. It is completely flat and almost entirely unshaded. On a typical June day, the asphalt radiates heat, making this one of the most challenging runs in the 70.3 series despite the lack of hills.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
Beginners: Eagleman is a fantastic entry point into the 70.3 distance because the bike and run courses are non-technical. There are no terrifying descents or grueling climbs to worry about, allowing you to focus entirely on your pacing and nutrition.
Experienced: For the elites and high-level age groupers, this is a 'power' course. If you can hold a high-wattage aero position and manage your core temperature on the run, you have a high chance of a personal best or a World Championship slot. It rewards those with high aerobic thresholds and disciplined cooling strategies.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Master the 'Constant Crank': Because the bike is so flat, you will never stop pedaling. Unlike hilly courses where you can coast on descents, Eagleman requires constant tension. Incorporate 90-minute 'no-coast' trainer sessions into your build-up.
- Aggressive Cooling: Start cooling your core before you feel hot. Utilize every aid station on the run—ice down the trisuit, cold water on the head, and sponges on the back of the neck. Once you redline from the Maryland heat, it’s very hard to recover.
- Aero is King: Since wind is your main obstacle on the bike, ensure your hydration setup doesn't break your aerodynamic profile. Use an integrated BTA (Between The Arms) bottle to stay tucked while drinking.
