Event Overview
Scheduled for late August 2026, the Santa Rosa Marathon is a premier endurance event located in the heart of Northern California’s Sonoma County. Known for its scenic beauty, the race takes runners through lush vineyards, over the iconic Old Redwood Highway, and along the flat, paved paths of the Santa Rosa Creek Trail. The vibe is a perfect blend of high-level competition and relaxed wine-country hospitality, making it one of the most popular Boston Marathon qualifiers on the West Coast.
Course Details & Terrain
The Santa Rosa Marathon course is celebrated for being remarkably flat and fast. Starting and ending in Old Town Courthouse Square, the route offers an elevation profile with very few significant climbs, making it an ideal venue for a Personal Best (PB).
The first half of the race winds through the countryside, where you’ll experience the morning mist over the grapevines. Underfoot, you'll encounter a mix of smooth asphalt and well-maintained trail paths. The middle section utilizes the Santa Rosa Creek Trail, which provides a long, uninterrupted stretch of flat terrain. While the course is fast, runners must be prepared for the exposed nature of the vineyard sections; if the sun comes out early, the temperature can rise quickly, and there is minimal shade in the rural loops.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
For Beginners: The Santa Rosa Marathon is an excellent choice for a first-time marathoner. The lack of daunting hills and the generous 6-hour cut-off time take the pressure off those just looking to finish. The community support at the start/finish area is infectious, providing a much-needed boost in the final miles.
For Experienced Athletes: This is a PB hunter’s dream. Because the course is so flat, it is frequently used by runners looking to secure a Boston Marathon qualifying time. Veterans will appreciate the efficient organization and the ability to lock into a consistent pace without the interruption of technical turns or steep gradients.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Bank Your Coolness, Not Your Time: Because the race starts early in the morning, it will be cool, but the Sonoma sun can be deceptive. Don't go out 20 seconds faster than your goal pace in the first 10 miles just because it feels easy. Stick to your target and save that energy for the exposed creek trail sections later in the day.
- Hydration is Key in the Microclimate: Sonoma County has unique humidity levels. Even if it doesn't feel hot, you are losing fluids. Use every aid station to sip water or electrolytes. I recommend a handheld flask for the sections between miles 15 and 22 where the sun is most intense.
- Shoe Choice: Since the course is almost entirely flat and on hard surfaces (asphalt and paved trail), opt for your highest-energy-return carbon-plated racing shoes. There’s no need for trail lugs here; focus on weight and propulsion.
