Event Overview
On June 6, 2026, the quiet town of Emporia, Kansas, will once again become the center of the cycling universe for UNBOUND Gravel. Formerly known as Dirty Kanza, this race is the spiritual home of gravel cycling. While the 200-mile distance is the flagship, the event offers distances ranging from 25 to 350 miles (XL). UNBOUND is legendary for its difficulty, its self-supported ethos, and the "spirit of gravel" that sees pros and amateurs alike battling the elements in the vast, rolling Flint Hills.
Course Details & Terrain
The Flint Hills are unique. Unlike the soft dirt roads of the East Coast, the gravel here consists of sharp, chunky limestone that can shred tires in seconds.
- The Elevation: While there are no mountains, the course is never flat. Constant rollers add up to thousands of feet of climbing, slowly sapping the legs.
- The Mud: If it rains, the Kansas "B-roads" turn into peanut-butter mud that can seize a drivetrain and stop a bike in its tracks.
- The Heat: June in Kansas is often brutal, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F (32°C) and high humidity, accompanied by relentless prairie winds.
- The Terrain: You will face creek crossings, rutted double-track, and fast, white-gravel sectors where speeds can exceed 30mph in a pack.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
For Beginners: The 25-mile and 50-mile distances are very achievable and provide a great taste of the UNBOUND atmosphere without the existential crisis of the 200. It's a great way to experience the world-class organization and community.
For Experienced Athletes: The 200-mile race is a test of attrition. It requires not just physical power, but mechanical savvy and nutritional discipline. For the elites, UNBOUND is the "Tour de France of Gravel," and a top-10 finish here is a career-defining achievement.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Tire Choice is Everything: Do not prioritize weight over durability. Run a 40-45mm tire with a reinforced casing (like a Maxxis Rambler SilkShield or Specialized Pathfinder Pro). Run slightly lower pressures than you think to help with vibration damping.
- Obsessive Hydration: You cannot rely solely on aid stations. Most riders wear a 1.5L-2L hydration pack in addition to two large bottles on the frame. Mix your fluids with high-sodium electrolytes to combat the Kansas heat.
- The 10-Second Rule: If you see a mechanical issue or a crash ahead, take 10 seconds to assess the best line rather than blindly following the wheel in front. In the Flint Hills, a split-second decision can be the difference between a finish and a DNF.
How to Train for This Event
UNBOUND is a race of endurance and resilience. Raye’s AI coaching platform builds bespoke ultra-endurance cycling plans that focus on "steady-state" power and metabolic efficiency. Your training will include back-to-back long rides to simulate the fatigue of the Flint Hills, along with specific guidance on your fueling strategy. Through WhatsApp, Raye monitors your TSS (Training Stress Score) and recovery, ensuring that when you line up in Emporia, you have the "diesel engine" required to grind through 200 miles of Kansas gravel.
