Event Overview
In August 2026, the cycling world descends upon Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for SBT GRVL. This is not just a race; it is a world-class celebration of the 'gravel' ethos—inclusive, challenging, and breathtakingly beautiful. The event offers multiple distances, but the 'Black' course is the ultimate test, spanning 142 miles of rolling dirt roads and significant elevation gain. Steamboat's high-altitude setting (starting at 6,700 feet) and its signature 'champagne powder' gravel make this one of the most prestigious and difficult one-day bike races in the United States.
Course Details & Terrain
The SBT GRVL course is unique because the gravel is generally high-quality and fast-rolling—often described as 'hard-pack dirt.' However, the challenge comes from the sheer scale of the day and the altitude. The 'Black' course features over 9,000 feet of climbing, with several long, grinding ascents that test both aerobic capacity and mental fortitude.
Key sections include Cow Creek, a fast and dusty sector that requires focus, and the infamous Oak Creek climbs. While the gradients aren't usually 'wall-like' (rarely exceeding 10%), the combination of the heat, the thin air, and the relentless rolling nature of the terrain means there is very little 'free' speed. The descents are fast and can be sweeping, requiring confident handling at high speeds on loose surfaces.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
For Beginners: The 'Green' and 'Red' courses are fantastic introductions to gravel racing. They offer the same world-class support and atmosphere with much more manageable distances and climbing. It is a great way to experience the Rocky Mountains without the 10+ hour commitment of the Black course.
For Experienced Athletes: The 'Black' course is a bucket-list achievement. For pros and elite amateurs, SBT GRVL is a high-speed tactical battle. Because the gravel is fast, drafting and 'pace-lining' are critical. You need to be comfortable riding in close quarters with other cyclists at 25mph on dirt roads.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Altitude Hydration: You will lose more fluid through respiration at 7,000 feet than you do at sea level. Start your hydration protocol 48 hours before the race. On race day, aim for at least 750ml to 1L of fluid per hour, heavily supplemented with sodium.
- Tire Choice is Key: Don't go too 'knobby.' Because the Steamboat gravel is so refined, a fast-rolling 38mm or 42mm tire with a slick or semi-slick center tread is the weapon of choice. This maximizes efficiency on the long road-like stretches.
- Find a Group: This is not a mountain bike race where you ride alone. The winds on the Colorado plains can be brutal. Save 20-30% of your energy by finding a group that matches your pace and working together. If you miss a 'train,' you will spend significantly more energy fighting the wind.
How to Train for This Event
SBT GRVL is an endurance test like no other. Raye’s customized WhatsApp training plans focus on building a massive aerobic base and 'sweet spot' power to handle the long Colorado climbs. We incorporate specific 'big gear' sessions to simulate climbing at altitude and suggest localized heat-acclimatization protocols if you're traveling from a cooler climate. Raye adapts your plan every day based on your recovery metrics, ensuring you arrive in Steamboat Springs with the stamina to finish strong on the Black course.
