Event Overview
Few events in the cycling world are as aptly named as the Hotter’N Hell Hundred. Held in late August 2026 in Wichita Falls, Texas, this event is a celebration of endurance, community, and the brutal Texas summer. What began in 1982 to celebrate the city’s centennial has grown into one of the largest sanctioned centuries in the United States. The vibe is purely Texan: hospitable, grand, and intensely hot. Cyclists from all over the world gather for the 7:06 AM start (timed with the sunrise) to attempt to beat the heat before the afternoon sun reaches its peak.
Course Details & Terrain
The 100-mile route is notoriously flat, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's easy. The challenge comes from two primary factors: the heat and the wind. The course takes riders through the wide-open ranch lands of North Texas. There is very little shade, and the asphalt can radiate heat, making it feel several degrees hotter than the ambient temperature.
The wind often acts as an 'invisible mountain.' A 15-20 mph headwind on the return leg can be more demoralizing than any Alpine climb. The most famous section is 'Hell’s Gate' at mile 60. Riders must reach this point by a certain time; if they don't, they are diverted to a shorter route for safety reasons as the temperature climbs toward 100°F (38°C).
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
Beginners: This is a fantastic 'first century' because the course is flat and the support (Rest Stops) is arguably the best in the world. Every few miles, you'll find ice, water, fruit, and 'Medical Angels' to keep you moving. However, beginners must respect the heat and start as early as possible.
Experienced: For the seasoned cyclist, this is a test of pacing and group riding skills. Staying in a fast-moving paceline is the key to finishing before the noon sun hits. It's a race against the thermometer as much as the clock. Setting a fast time here is a badge of honor in the American cycling community.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Pre-Hydrate Like a Pro: Hydration for Hotter’N Hell starts 48 hours before the gun goes off. Focus on high-sodium electrolytes. On the day, don't wait until you're thirsty; sip every 10 minutes from the moment you roll out of the start line.
- Drafting is Mandatory: Unless you are an elite time-trialist, do not ride alone. Find a group moving at your pace and tuck in. Saving 30% of your energy in the first 50 miles will be the difference between finishing strong and 'bonking' at Hell's Gate.
- The Ice Sock Trick: At the rest stops, fill a nylon stocking or thin sock with ice and place it down the back of your jersey. As the ice melts, it provides evaporative cooling to your core and neck, which can be a literal lifesaver in 100-degree heat.
