Event Overview
Taking place in late September 2026, the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo is not your average cycling event. Curated by professional cyclist Jeremiah Bishop, this Harrisonburg, Virginia, classic is inspired by the mountain stages of the Grand Tours. The event is famous for its "Alpine Loop" route—a grueling 110-mile journey with over 10,000 feet of climbing. It features spectacular views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Allegheny Mountains, but the real draw is the legendary ascent of Reddish Knob, one of the highest points in Virginia.
Course Details & Terrain
The course is a mix of pristine paved roads and several high-quality unpaved "dirt sector" climbs. This isn't a gravel race, but it’s "road-plus."
The Climbs: The centerpiece is the climb to the summit of Reddish Knob. It is long, steep, and features switchbacks that would look right at home in the French Alps. The gradient frequently kicks into the double digits.
The Sectors: Expect sections of packed forest roads. While smooth enough for a standard road bike, these sections require careful line choice and confident handling. The descents are fast and technical; the descent from the summit of Reddish Knob is particularly exhilarating but demands total focus and excellent braking technique.
The Finish: After the major mountain passes, there is a rolling run-back into Harrisonburg. If you are in a group, this is a fast section, but if you are solo, the prevailing winds can make these final miles feel much longer than they are.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
For Beginners: The Alpine Loop offers shorter distances, such as the 36-mile Valley View or the 62-mile Shenandoah Mountain Adventure. These are much more manageable for those new to climbing. However, the full "Alpine Loop" is a serious undertaking that requires significant base miles.
For Experienced Athletes: This is a bucket-list event for climbers. If you love the challenge of sustained 20-30 minute climbs and technical, high-speed descents, this is your race. It is a fantastic opportunity to test your mountain legs against some of the best amateur cyclists on the East Coast.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- Tire Selection: For the full loop, I recommend 28mm or 30mm tubeless tires. The extra volume will provide much-needed grip and comfort on the dirt sectors and better heat dissipation during the long descents from Reddish Knob.
- Pacing the 'Knob': Do not go into the red during the first half of the Reddish Knob climb. The steepest pitches are near the summit. If you have a power meter, aim to stay at 85-90% of your FTP for the bulk of the climb to ensure you don't crack before the top.
- Nutrition on the Move: With 10,000 feet of climbing, your caloric burn will be massive. Aim for 60-90g of carbohydrates per hour. Use the aid stations to refill bottles, but try to eat your solid food on the flatter valley sections so you aren't trying to chew while gasping for air on a 12% grade.
