IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth 2026: Conquering the Jurassic Coast

IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth 2026: Conquering the Jurassic Coast

Event Overview

Taking place on September 20, 2026 (provisional), IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth is one of the UK's most popular middle-distance triathlons. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the race offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and grueling challenge. The event hub is centered around Weymouth’s sandy beach and Georgian seafront, providing a classic British seaside atmosphere. With thousands of spectators lining the run course, the energy is electric, making it a bucket-list race for triathletes across Europe.

Course Details & Terrain

The race begins with a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim in Weymouth Bay. The water is generally well-sheltered, but it is an open-sea swim, so athletes should be prepared for potential swell or chop depending on the wind direction. Transition 1 (T1) is located at Lodmoor Country Park, a short run from the beach.

The 56-mile (90km) bike course is a one-loop journey through the rolling Dorset countryside. While not containing any massive alpine-style climbs, the course is 'punchy.' It features approximately 700m of elevation gain with constant undulations that can sap the legs of athletes who over-gear. The roads are a mix of fast A-roads and technical, narrower country lanes with some sweeping descents.

The 13.1-mile (21.1km) run is a flat, two-and-a-half lap course that follows the Weymouth Esplanade and the harbor. The terrain is entirely paved and incredibly fast, though it is highly exposed to the sea breeze, which can create a tough headwind on one half of the loop.

Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)

Weymouth is an excellent choice for 70.3 beginners. The swim is relatively straightforward for an ocean dip, and the run is flat, which takes some of the psychological pressure off the final leg. The bike course, while rolling, is not excessively technical, making it manageable for those still gaining confidence on their TT bikes.

For experienced athletes, Weymouth is a 'strength-endurance' test. To post a fast time here, you need to be able to push high power over short, repetitive rollers without burning out for the run. The flat run course offers massive PB potential for those who have saved enough in their legs to maintain a high cadence on the promenade.
