Event Overview
Hyrox London, held at the massive ExCeL Centre in early September 2026, serves as the unofficial kickoff to the European indoor fitness season. As one of the largest Hyrox events globally, the atmosphere is electric—think loud music, strobe lights, and thousands of athletes pushing their limits. The ExCeL provides a vast, flat arena that allows for a sprawling 'Roxzone' and a clear, well-organized race floor. This is more than a race; it's a festival of functional fitness.
Course Details & Terrain
The Hyrox format is standardized: 8 rounds of a 1km run followed by a functional workout station. However, the ExCeL's specific layout matters. The floor is polished concrete, which offers excellent grip for the running segments but can be 'sticky' for the Sled Push and Sled Pull stations.
The stations are: 1km Run, 1km SkiErg, 1km Run, 50m Sled Push, 1km Run, 50m Sled Pull, 1km Run, 80m Burpee Broad Jumps, 1km Run, 1km Rowing, 1km Run, 200m Farmers Carry, 1km Run, 100m Sandbag Lunges, 1km Run, and finally, 75 or 100 Wall Balls. The transition area (Roxzone) at the ExCeL is notoriously long, meaning athletes need to be strategic about where they recover and how they enter/exit the stations.
Who Should Enter? (Beginners vs. Experienced)
Beginners should enter the 'Open' category. Hyrox is designed to be inclusive; there are no time limits, and the community is incredibly supportive. If you can run 1km and perform basic functional movements, you can finish a Hyrox. The London event is great for first-timers because the sheer number of participants means you’ll find plenty of people at your exact fitness level.
Experienced/Pro athletes will find the London ExCeL to be a 'fast' floor. The competition in the Pro division here is world-class, often featuring members of the Elite 15. For veterans, the challenge is minimizing time in the Roxzone and mastering the specific friction of the ExCeL carpets on the sled pull. Every second saved in transition counts toward a possible World Championship qualification.
Coach Raye's Race-Day Pro Tips
- The Sled Friction Factor: The carpet at the ExCeL can vary in 'speed' depending on humidity. Test your shoes' grip during the warm-up. On the Sled Pull, focus on a consistent 'hand-over-hand' rhythm rather than massive, jerky pulls to avoid premature grip burnout.
- Roxzone Discipline: It is very tempting to walk and catch your breath in the long ExCeL Roxzone. Don't. Maintain a slow 'active recovery' jog. Walking kills your momentum and makes it much harder to start the next run segment.
- Wall Ball Efficiency: In the final station, the crowd will be screaming. Stay calm. Focus on a high chest and 'catching' the ball high to minimize the squat depth. Break your sets into manageable chunks (e.g., 15-15-15) before you hit total failure.
How to Train for This Event
Hyrox is a unique beast that requires both aerobic capacity and raw strength. To conquer the ExCeL, you need a plan that integrates running with 'compromised' movement. Coach Raye builds adaptive, Hyrox-specific training plans delivered directly through WhatsApp. Raye’s AI analyzes your running pace vs. your strength metrics to create a balanced program that ensures you won't 'gas out' on the lunges or stumble at the wall balls.
